Everyone knows the love affair between Texans and their Friday night lights. When the great school boy dynasties are named — not just in Texas but around the nation — the Southlake Carroll Dragons will make just about everyone’s list. The Dragons have been the state’s most dominant high school sports program of this century, winning four state football titles (2002, 2004, 2005, 2006) behind such talent as former QB Chase Daniel. Carroll’s resume also includes winning 79 of its first 80 Class 5A games and a 49-game winning streak. That streak was snapped in Sept. 16, 2007 when Carroll, ranked No. 1 in the nation, played host to Miami Northwestern High School, ranked No. 2 nationally. The game was played before 32,000 at SMU’s Ford Stadium and televised national on ESPNU. Miami won the game 29-21.
The first high-stakes football game in North
Texas was the Texas-OU game in 1912.
Super Bowl XLV is in 2011. That’s one full
century of great football in our backyard.
In each week we’ll take a look at the people
and moments that made North Texas such a
football hotbed and laid the groundwork for
the NFL bringing the Super Bowl here.
