In the 1978 Cotton Bowl was supposed to be the coronation for UT Heisman Trophy winner Earl Campbell. But Joe Montana’s Notre Dame squad foiled the national title hopes of No. 1 Texas for the second time in seven seasons with a 38-10 upset. The Irish’s Vagas Ferguson scored three times and Terry Eurick scored twice to vault the Irish from fifth to first in the final national rankings.
